Everything you ever wanted to know about hemp.

WHAT IS HEMP EXTRACT AND WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?

That's a great question — and one many people are asking these days. First off, hemp extract is a cannabidiol, one of the over 100 different cannabinoids found in the Cannabis sativa plant. Both hemp extract and THC are considered a phytocannabinoid. (That’s just a fancy way of saying their molecules is made by plants.) Many plants such as black pepper, echinacea, and even cacao contain cannabinoids. Cannabis just has a much higher concentration of them. Any phytocannabinoid will interact with your endocannabinoid (ECS) system. Hemp is a type of cannabis grown specifically with a higher level of hemp extract and very low level of THC.

Cannabinoids Explained
Cannabinoids are naturally occurring chemicals found in the cannabis plant. You might have heard of Hemp Extract and THC. While they are the often the most well-known, they are just two types of over 100 other cannabinoids that exist in the cannabis plant.

Cannabinoids can also be found naturally in the body. These particular types of cannabinoids are part of the endocannabinoid system and act as messengers sending signals to the brain, gut or other parts to help regulate basic bodily functions.
Much of the conversation and research on uses and effects of the cannabis plant focuses on Hemp Extract and THC exclusively – so it’s important to know the difference.
The difference between Hemp Extract/THC
As noted, hemp Extract and THC are both naturally occurring cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. While they both affect the body by communicating with the endocannabinoid system, they each play different roles.

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive chemical responsible for making you stoned or high. Hemp Extract is non-psychoactive is responsible for more calming, relaxed feelings and, when acting with THC, can counter some of those effects.

How Hemp Extract works

in the Body.

THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM YOU DIDN'T EVEN KNOW YOU HAD

If you've ever taken biology, you've probably learned about a few major systems in the body — the nervous system, digestive system, endocrine system, immune system — to name a few. But you most likely never had a pop quiz on the Endocannabinoid system. Learn more about this relatively recent discovery in the human body and why it matters to you.

Endocannabinoid System and You
Cannabinoids are not only found in the cannabis plant–they're also naturally occurring chemicals found in the body. The cannabinoids created in the body are part of the endocannabinoid system, and they act as messengers sending signals to the brain, gut or other parts of the body to help regulate basic bodily functions. When you smoke, vape or eat cannabinoids, they affect the body talking to the endocannabinoid system.
The cannabinoids created in the body are part of the endocannabinoid system, and they act as messengers sending signals to the brain, gut or other parts of the body to help regulate basic bodily functions.
How Does It Work?
With two primary receptors, the endocannabinoid system is vital to our sense of wellbeing. CB1 receptors are found throughout the brain, central nervous system and peripheral nervous system. These moderate everything from mood and memory to motor function and the perception of pain. CB2 receptors, on the other hand, can be found primarily in the immune system and gut - although recent research indicates that these receptors may also be in the brain. CB2 receptors help moderate our response to inflammation as well as how our body handles pathogens.
The endocannabinoid system is still a relatively recent discovery in the vast timeline of understanding human biology. A lot is unknown about how it works, but emerging research suggests it has a significant role in regulating memories, metabolism, stress and pain response, sleep, and reproduction.
Benefits and Beyond
Researchers, scientists and medical professionals are all working to understand and validate the legitimate benefits of Hemp Extract in its various forms and delivery methods.

According to Project Hemp Extract, a non-profit educational news service, Extensive preclinical research—much of it sponsored by the U.S. government—indicates that Hemp Extract has potent anti-tumoral, antioxidant, anti-spasmodic, anti-psychotic, anti-convulsive, and neuroprotective properties. Hemp Extract directly activates serotonin receptors, causing an anti-anxiety effect, as well.

Plant extraction techniques

matter more than you think.

WHY WE CHOOSE THE METHODS WE DO

Although Hemp Extract is naturally abundant in the hemp plant, extracting it from the plant in quantities high enough to experience hemp’s benefits is a bit of a process. There are three main types of hemp extraction - Steam Distillation, Solvent Extraction and Carbon Dioxide or CO2 Extraction. While each process has its benefits and drawbacks, we always choose the cleanest, highest quality extraction methods – predominantly CO2 extraction. This method creates the highest quality hemp extract, with a process that's also safer and better for the environment. When we use something other than CO2, we do so in order to comply with strict standards like USDA organic which requires clean ethanol since CO2 cannot be certified organic.

Full Spectrum
A full-spectrum extract means it contains all phytochemicals naturally found in the plant. That includes Hemp Extract, trace cannabinoids, terpenes and essential oils. These extracts come with THC levels below 0.3%.

In this type of hemp extract, the full spectrum of active compounds can work together to enhance or amplify the benefits of individual cannabinoids.
Full-spectrum hemp is the base for the majority of our products. Looking to get all the benefits from full-spectrum Hemp Extract? Try our Daily Balance Capsules
Broad Spectrum
Broad-spectrum Hemp Extract contains cannabidiol and the other compounds within the plant. However, the small amount of THC is removed after the extraction.

Like full-spectrum Hemp Extract, Broad spectrum Hemp Extract contains all the cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids found in the hemp plant that create the Entourage Effect, but without any THC. Broad-spectrum products are a great option for those who cannot have any traces of THC in their system.
Looking for a broad-spectrum Hemp Extract solution? Try our Daily Balance Winter Mint Tinctures
Hemp Extract Isolate
Hemp Extract isolate is the furthest down the funnel in the Hemp Extract extraction process. Isolate is created by extracting the compound from its natural environment and removing all other ingredients.

While noted as the purest and highest concentration of Hemp Extract, that does not mean it is the most effective. Because of its pure nature, Hemp Extract isolate lacks the entourage of benefits from terpenes and flavonoids that can be found in full- and broad-spectrum extracts.
At Elixinol, we make our products with only full- and broad-spectrum hemp oil so you can enjoy all the benefits the wonderous hemp plant has to offer.

Frequently asked questions

How does Hemp Extract work in the body?

Hemp Extract works in the body by activating receptors in the brain and nervous system the endocannabinoid system (ECS). It affects different receptors to THC and affects many receptors which are responsible for the regulation of many parts of the bodys systems.

How long does it take for Hemp Extract to take effect?

At the right dosage, it typically takes between 20 and 30 minutes for the Hemp Extract effects to be noticeable. As Hemp Extract has no psychoactive component, there is no high. You may experience a reduction in pain, reduced tremor, a sense of calm. It does depend on why you are taking Hemp Extract oil and whether you are taking enough to combat the symptoms you have and whether Hemp Extract has an effect on you.

How is Hemp Oil extracted from hemp?

Hemp Oil can extracted from hemp using a number of methods. Elixinol uses a completely organic plant and extracts Hemp Oil and a full spectrum of other cannabinoids using a specialized CO2 extraction process. Other Hemp Extract suppliers use chemical extraction which leaves behind other essential cannabinoids which we believe reduces the effectiveness of Hemp Extract.

What is the endocannabinoid system?

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a group of endogenous cannabinoid receptors found in the brain of mammals. It is present throughout the CNS and peripheral nervous system. The ECS is composed of neuromodulatory lipids and many endocannabinoid receptors which regulate many mechanisms within the body. The Endocannabinoid system receptors are specifically receptive to cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant.

What are the side-effects of Hemp Extract?

Hemp Extract side effects are almost negligible. They are certainly nowhere near the often scary side-effects lists that are seen in many FDA approved pharmaceutical products! Please read this article on the side effects of Hemp Extract. Perhaps a little stomach discomfort for those on high doses and some very low-level sedative effects. In a similar way that using a drop of Lavender oil on your skin might relaxes you. Hemp Extract produces no psychoactive effect so there is no high or particular concern about your ability to function normally.

Is it possible to overdose on Hemp Extract?

No Hemp Extract in high dosages may incur mood or anxiety swings but it will not be lethal.
